Dangerous Theft
Ups. I forgot to close the cupboard.
Looks like they had some fun. I tried very hard to not become hysterical when Tessa threw up parts of the packing. I observed her very carefully for some days though.
What would you do if this happens again? Was it naive that I didn’t go to the vet immediately?

what is it? I can’t see what it is. I have a fit if my husband leaves a cupboard open. That being said, when Cody wants to eat, he will chew on anything and everything (from tables, etc.)……..I can’t say anything about the Vet because I don’t know what it is, but if something is poisonous I would call the Pet Poison hotline first (888) 426-4435. I had something happen a few years ago where I thought Cody ingested one of my pills (he didn’t), I called the Vet first and he told me to call the Pet Poison Hotline (It was at 11 at night). They charge $60 something but it is worth every penny if God forbid it was something awful and it is faster than going to the Vet.

This is very good advice, thank you! I don’t think there’s a Pet Poison Hotline in Finland, but I could call the 24h vet clinic to ask for advice.
It wasn’t anything poisonous, actually the content of the package is a cat treat , so nothing dangerous there. Tessa apparently ate the package / wrapping / packing (I’m sorry if I chose the wrong word!) which is aluminium. And thank you so much, this isn’t an acute situation anymore (I guess so at least? Is it still critical?) as this happened some days ago.
I was just in general wondering if I should go to the vet right away when I know that the cats have been eating something they shouldn’t, esp. plastic and aluminium – which is of course something different than meds or other poisons.

Bravo girls – but the packaging of those treats is really tough to get through.
Now we felines are very wise usually and we don’t eat stuff we shouldn’t – if we do, quite often you humans will see it pretty darn fast. Elastic bands, hair bands etc. they are pretty bad for us and can cause problems in our guts. And our behaviour will give you the strongest message!

… I sometimes wonder whether you can really use “common sense” and “cats” in one sentence without a negation…
Thank you! Behavior is very important, trouble is when I become hysterical, I read in every behavior something bad. But ok, I’m still aware that there’s a good chance that I’m overreacting – if they showed really weird behavior, I’d see the difference. Hopefully.

I wouldn’t have called the vet, it doesn’t look like any big pieces were pulled off. It was a good idea to keep an eye on them though. I guess you need to be extra careful at closing doors 🙂

I’m so stupid that I forgot this door. It’s not just any door, but the door of the cat cupboard where all their food, Valerian, treats, dry food… is. So no wonder that they got excited…
I’ve to become better in writing posts, I realized now that it was hard to understand me. Caren couldn’t regocnize what I was showing, and you couldn’t see that I didn’t show the bits they swallowed. Tessa threw up a big piece of purple metallic packing …

I wouldn’t have rushed Tessa to the vet. But I would have kept an eye on her like you did. It doesn’t look like she ate much of the packaging. Mine have done similar things like this and usually just throw up. ~Island Cat Mom

Thank you! So “nice” to hear that your terrorists have done similar things! <3

Glad it was not anything poisonous. Sounds like she didn’t ingest large piece and the content was a kitty treat – I would have observed before rushing to vet, too. In the past, I went to vet for any small occasions, which just gave my boys too much stress, and stress could cause more health issues. Depending on the situation, I’ve learned it would be better to observe/consult before rushing to the vet.
By the way, my boys (well, Goro, more precisely) have “trained” me to close cupboard doors over the years 🙂

Thank you for your thoughts! Everything was very “dramatic” when I first got my girls, we were all the time seeing vet nurses and vets… and what I learned at this time was to give the cats a break. I now ask myself “what can a vet do right now?”. It’s a bit like going to the doctor as a human when you’re having a cold on the first day – if you don’t need a sick leave for work, it’s probably best that you sleep a lot.
However, it’s very difficult to keep the balance between “common sense” , “let them rest” and “they need professional help”…
